I've tried one of the turtle beach ones out before, and as far as gaming headsets go, they're actually not that bad.
Personally I've got a pair of audiophile headphones (Goldring DR150s) and use them with my Xonar DG soundcard. The 5.1 and even 7.1 Dolby emulation software is amazing. So much more immersive with it. Oh, and software surround sound beats hardware surround sound, all day long :

Re: New build?
Still very happy with my G35 with software emulated 7.1 surround. The best headset I've had so far, while many people seem to disagree!
I've had two of those Fatal1ty headsets as well. The first one broke in 4 months and I've had it replaced with a new copy. That one also went within half a year..

Oh Lord. Is there no decent budget headphones, that'll sound awesome yet have it's own mic!? :'(

Re: New build?
Of course there are, but you can't expect 5.1 quality from a budget headset? They'll sound good enough, but you get what you pay for?

Re: New build?
There's plenty, but sound is more oily for some people than the taste of there favourite food
Some people are playing with inboard sound cards and £5 headsets, others like I used to £200 sound card and about £500 of high fidelity, gold plated connectors, and you can hear a grenade pin drop at 400 meters in game
Last night I heard civi car start up, from practxily the other side of map I got bat like hearing when I'm "in the zone"

That got a true LOL from me. :')
I know I can't skimp, But.. Audio's lovely to have and sure, I'd love to have the top of line sound but it's not exactly 'Essential'.. I feel like I'm totally knocking sound to an audiophile, but If it's not an essential to have a PC, I can't get it just yet :/
Maybe not the Fat1lity, then, but I'll look around. I've been using my turtle beach XLC's with a 2.5mm (Xbox mic) to 3.5mm adapter all this time, The sound isn't THAT good (It's a £15 headset), but my dad got a pair of sony ones, full ear covering stuff, and I loved them. Only problem was they didn't have a mic, I'll try and find 'em.
Sony MDR-XD200
Might not seem much, but those Headphones were perfect. All I'd ask if there was a quality/decent mind connected to it and i'd jump at them. Anyone got any similar suggestions?
Found these - Turtle Beach (I know) Z2 Gaming Headset
I don't mind the turtle beach company at all, and these are the PC equivalent to the console ones, which do work very well. But.. I'd still be using onboard sound, as £80 for both isn't spare change currently. -.-

Re: New build?
For poops and giggles I just old 2 oldhetsets the saitek gh20 and plantronics Audio 770
The saitek is a tight fitting ear cup, it has in line volume control, and also comes with a USB power lead which vibrates the cups, bit gimiky but fun, using the Asia xonar card (which apparently has headphone boost) I hooked it up
WoW! £25 for the headset new, I swear you will not be dissapoimted, it's been along time since a set of headphones and a drum solo ( I play drums ) made s
Me smile like a kid at crimbo!
Got a twisty boom mic that can be set at different angles, very solid built
And as for the asus sound card, possiythe best kept secret in gaming, boosted the gain to max, ignored the warnings and the played my song, the headset took it easily in it's stride!
And just checked the planteonics price, £70 screw that, they wernt when I bought them!!
Check out the saitek GH20

Re: New build?
Voodoo if you really like the Sony's then go for them, and get a microphone like I have. It's a "clip-on" microphone like TV people use, and the sound quality is crystal clear.
One of these in fact: clicky!

Re: New build?
I was playing PR with them today.
With the xonar settings amped right up, every footstep sounded crisp. Just enough to bass to feel like your hitting the floor.
Gunshots were so loud you feel you should turn them down then you start feeling part of the game and just let it roll
Enemy footsteps were clear and using xonars emulated 5.1 on it's smallest setting (there's 3. Close, wide and something else) I could spot enemy and antipacte there movements

Re: New build?
Are you some sort of omni-present being? I can't wait for some decent gaming.. But my motherboard and Power supply hasn't come for ANOTHER day. If it's not here tomorrow (Last day to be reasonable at, it did say it may take up to 2 extra days, but the original date was yesterday for it to arrive) I'll commit. >
