windows update problem Empty windows update problem

Post by speedhound1-WYD- Sun 15 Jan - 20:07:43

haven't been on this weekend because......

normally when i get a problem i am able to fix it by logical progression, research and sometimes luck but this has me securely in a catch 22.

i cant update any microsoft software, i can't download microsofts own problem finder because it's....microsofts.....

spent about 15-20 hours on this.

i'm sure i'm missing something.

any attempt just goes round in ever decreasing circles of utter frustration.

windows vista 32

and before anyone says "o theres your problem" vista has provided me with a stable platform since its release, in fact this is the first 'can't solve' i've had.

so...

any ideas, any similar history, any know fixes.

why is microsoft such a bunch of c***s.

i need either;

help

or

cheering up

both will be gratefully recieved

So you can't update your windows (or any other microsoft software for that matter)? Is that the only problem, or is your computer just plain unworkable?

Do you have the absolute legal version of vista? I've seen a lot of guys having problems with updating but they had an illegal version..

can't update windows.

admittedly i haven't updated for about a year (most updates had become non-critical) so i stopped.

well now i need them again it says

"windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running"

no error code (even when run as admin)

it seems to be a common problem but for the life of me i can't get around it.

all because i wanted a new mouse (cyborg software support says an error in the download is most likely due to windows not being updated)

when i go to control panel and open 'windows update' the screen hangs for about 2 minutes before loading in, then when i click 'check for updates' i get that message (above)

:(

edit :yes it is all legal

have you tried this tool:

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683

but i bet that this is how you fix it:
the key is the part of the messasge that says "... because the service is not running ...". For some reason one of the background services the Windows Update relies on is not running and cannot start.
-in the Start menu, search field, enter "CMD"
-right click on the icon that is found
-select "run as adminstrator"
-provide the administrator password
-in the DOS window that opens enter "services.msc"
-look through the list of services for the following: "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" / "Windows Module Installer" / "Windows Update". Are they Status "started"?
-Right click on each one, select properties
-set "Starupt type" to "Automatic"
-start each one

I highly doubt that windows not being up-to-date (for half a year) will cause some software not to run. If it's an issue with microsoft software at all I blame the .net framework -.-

I also run Vista and I've not updated it for a year. Yes, it's a legal version, yes I just don't give a damn about updates that eat away my at my harddisk Razz. Anyway, I've so far not had any issues with running new software.

But if it even takes so long to even open the update window I'm thinking something more in the direction of software corruption (or conflicting settings somewhere deep down in the core) or something could be really wrong.

Och Bullsh*t Sta Razz Vista with servicepack 3 is just as fast as Windows 7 is. It just took them 2 service packs to remove all the bloatware from Vista ^^

ok i'll try your recipe sta and will report in a bit.

as for MS fix it 50202 "service 'windows update'[WUAUSERV] failed to start"

this is what i've been getting for all previous attempts.

also i have turned everything off (firewalls etc) and re-applied standard IE9 settings

kop that might be something to try (DL onto my missus lappy then upload to mine)

also kop i have no idea when this problem occured (within 1 year) so roll back is my utter last resort !!

H.Sta was the only one close, buts what's stopping the services. Ever heard of Confiker worm. Otherwise known as too much porn.

you have a well known virus speed. It blocks acces to windows update servers and well known anti virus sites.

get ccleaner and malware bytes install in safe mode, they will update and run in safe mode. That will get rid of it. Then you'll be able to update again.

was able to run 50202 in aggresive mode, worked.

no Orford that had been part of my preliminary work, malwarebytes was my first port of call and amongst other virus checking scans i found nothing.

Nayt, as i said no MS stuff would work whether single or as a complete update.

anyway fixed now, and ms Winslet is on TV naked so......

see you all tomorrow and thanks to all who posted thumbsup

.net framework is a nasty one if it's not working correctly. I have 3 separate versions (2.5, 3.5 and 4.0) installed because apparently it's not 100% backwards compatible with some programs :/ I just don't want to take any risks with it.. bloody microfail

I might have suggested not to use the update program on windows but just use the site, the site checks and installs yo stuff without the windows updater i believe. But I guess no more use for me :) Glad it got fixed

i had somethin similar to this with vista. but my dad bought a new PC and got 2 Windows 7 instllation cd's with it... 32 bit and a 64 bit, i upgraded my PC for a little bit and installed the 64 bit windows... it runs perfect now.

I would say installing Win7 or reinstalling vista will do the job i think
