Single Greatest War Film? Empty Single Greatest War Film?

Post by Voodoo Wed 3 Aug - 0:19:52

Saving Private Ryan.

I can't put into words how much I love this film, seriously. It's (Tactical g*y Moment INBOUND!!) emotional as hell, Tom Hanks is the greatest actor ever, and the scenario of the D-Day landings to it's epic ending (I won't ruin it.. but you're a frigging hermit if you've never watched the damn thing) I enjoyed start to finish, and even my Masculinity took a dent at the end, I was swear to god welling up at it.

Any to recommend? I'm going to get the pacific, and watch some Vietnam ones (I love the 'nam war, so.. Platoon looks good) and your favourite war film/series? Razz

Band of Brothers, even though it's a mini-series.

Both are immersive as fwack.

Tumbledown (1988), written in honesty and got so much right, still very relevant today.......Tarra if you don't like SPR try 'the longest day' (1962) a far more factual portrayal of D-Day interestingly written from both perspectives.......Appointment in London (1952) is for me without doubt the best film about Air warfare. interesting psychological war film would be Hell in the Pacific (1968)....also can't forget Catch 22 (1970).....best naval action for me would be The Cruel Sea (1953) and Das Boot (1981)........hmm showing my age i think.....

Meh, Whilst some films do portray the US as liberating hero's with no faults or defects, Spielberg to me, at least, showed a true nitty gritty side of war, and showed the effect and the tolerance of the soldiers doing it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZgKo46X8CI

Now, that to me at 1:50 shows at least what.. 8 US Soldiers majority young being mowed down in MG42 fire? Seems to me like it's showing a blind assault with an obscure goal Razz

Band of Brothers is much better than SPR in my opinion. SPR is a good film and all, but the middle section just lacks something. It's almost like it's following a special group instead of the frontlines? I dunno. Much prefer the longest day, really excellent film, with an immense cast.

Das boot is great but loooong.

Personally, I love Where Eagles Dare, though not a traditional war film, it's a great suspenseful thriller set in WW2, with a raid on a Nazi castle. Clint eastwood hip shooting an mp40 and killing about 30 people is probably my highlight!

okay, saving private ryan is a good movie but it's most certenly not the best war film out there. I mean "sticky bombs"? come on...
Can't really think of any other good film right now except for BoB but I'll post later if I can remember any good films I've seen.

yeah Jay, i've seen that, bit unsympathetic to the situation that inspired it and you should question why that subject was chosen in the first place (anti Iraq war political undertones), but not unique, there was plenty of army bashing by Hollywood after Vietnam as well. contrast Platoon with hamburger hill or go tell the spartans for example.

@ Rob, just noticed your comments on Nazi's, oh dear what on earth are they teaching the young'uns these days.

ok, the national socialist German workers party (the Nazis) were a political party, there militia was the SS, and were all quite different from the German army, air force and navy.

the Nazi's were scum who came up with scum ideas which were then implemented by their scum militia (the SS)......not a hero amongst them, which is why they are still tracked down today to be held accountable for their abhorrent crimes against humanity.

best series i think would go to Generation Kill as people are including series in a thread about films lol

I wouldn't like to vote on a best movie ever, because there's a lot of really good war films (and documentary styled films) out there.

Series stuff however? Band of Brother and Gen. Kill are both great. The Pacific was definitely not as good as it's predecessor BoB, but still a good watch.

I agree, I do prefer the less heroic films. Full Metal Jacket being one of them.

I think Band of Brothers did a good job too.

Yeah, You're right. Summed up the german forces were the 'Wehrmacht' or, Defensive force if my german serves me correct. The ground (Heer) Air (Luftwaffe - Most well known) and the Navy (Kriegsmarine) are what made that up. The SS were the Secret Service, and acted as hitlers arms and oppressed and commanded as to what he brainwashed them into doing. The Gestapo (Secret Police) weren't nice guys either, as If I remember correctly, an extremely high ranking SS Officer (Himmler, if I'm correct, a massive arsebandit of hitler's) governed them and they had warrants to abduct and exterminate threats to Hitler's perfect society. It was the Gestapo that found Jews in neighbourhoods and sent them to the Ghettos, where their Journey to the concentration camps begun.

Yeah, Hitler's rage at the Jews, was the fact that they were a Minority (AKA, Prime Scapegoat) and during the large German Depression after WW1, Hitler came back from the war to be a homeless artist. Most Jews had businesses and were good with money, and he felt angry at the Jews for being well off when he wasn't. Kristallnacht didn't help the jews either, but that's something for your homework.

Single Greatest War Film? Empty Idi i Smotri (Come and See)

Post by katzenjammert Fri 5 Aug - 13:35:24

Check out Idi i Smotri (Come and See - 1985) and make sure u download it with subtitles. This Russian WWII movie actually influenced Spielberg's camera work and sound design in SPR.

Note: I believe they shot a life cow with an mg42 for the movie, so PETA members might wanna skip this film.

"There is nothing pretty about the violence, about the death and destruction that permeates Come and See. Nevertheless, it is clear that Klimov is not taking poetic license or exaggerating the horror of war visited upon the civilian population of Belarus. Belarus suffered three million casualties during the war and of the towns and villages destroyed during the fighting at least 450 of them were intentionally destroyed by the Germans, their inhabitants along with them, in retaliation for Partisan actions. Klimov's Come and See is as good a testament to the times the people of Belarus lived through as any monument of bronze or marble. This is a must-see film."

watched a gritty war film the other day called,

Lebanon (2009)

its a difficult watch, the sub titles are not good quality which is not helped by the fact most dialogue is radio talk to Israeli military protocols using code !!

get over that and watch as a new gun aimer has to deal with the realities of conflict through a reticule of an old British centurion tank.

genuinely moving film, a must see.

Just to educate about Omaha Beach, according to Stephen Ambrose the troops were there stuck on the beach for 4 hours if memory serves me right. In the film it's about 10mins and then they 'kick ass' .. In my opinion it does the guys that died there a dis-service, but that's only my opinion.
