Re: petition for dice
Yeah.. Guys with an attitude like that will never win.. Devs on the pr website are also being absolutely pessimistic towards the opener. We all know chances are limited, but trying is NEVER wrong and it takes 10 seconds of your time.. No effort, little chance but maximum gain..

Re: petition for dice
Not to be a pessimistic, as I would love to see this happen but there already was a petition floating around for this a year or two back that I think had at least 5k signatures (compared to >100 that this one has). I may be delusional as I can't find it anymore but I suspect old petitions on these websites like the one linked get deleted.

Re: petition for dice
If dice releases code for bf2 that would mean, the game will be still alive and mods will be evolving for couple more years if not longer. I know pr will still evolve a bit but that's not the same. I bet, dice is surprised and rather dissatisfied with for how long its already going. They removed mod support from their games since bf2 era because they don't want another "Project Reality", massive mod that totally overhauled their creation and made it 100 times better. Dice is in league with ea and if those greedy types has anything to say, they would rather blast every bf2 server to get done with it and make some more money on the future productions instead of helping to grow ungrateful-not-buying-new-games community. Ironically the success of PR (and FH) might be the reason why they are so reluctant to release the source code. They are afraid of what's behind those doors.

Re: petition for dice
Releasing the source code for a game like BF2 is of course in DICE's best interests. Much like Arma 2, a large portion of BF2 sales are made so people can play mods for the game and not the game itself. I doubt DICE particularly care that people could change their pretty creation. The reason BF3 is not moddable is because of DLC and BF4. No one will buy BF4 if you are too busy enjoying hundreds of great BF3 mods. Also, no one will buy DLC for BF3 if they can just get mods for free.
I imagine that if DICE did ever release the source code for BF2 it would come at a price. The PR devs would have to charge people to play the mod and then a cut would be given to DICE, who would of course hold the licence to the engine that you made the mod on.
Either way it is very unlikely that they would ever release the source code.
