Re: "The German"
good story, i suppose the moral of the story is don't go around using guns in a country that's not at war (even if they are attached to a spitfire !!)
mind you easy enough mistake, intercepting a box over the Bristol channel or Cardigan bay on it's way to Liverpool, 6-8 minutes of dogfight later you're over Ireland....
mind you is that a real story ? i can't think that many raids over Liverpool would have had fighter escort (maybe 110's perhaps) and the ditching thing is also a bit erm, exaggerated ? from everything i've ever read ditching a spit would almost always end in death (c of g and air intake scoops) and you certainly wouldn't do it voluntarily.
but yeah good story, wasn't expecting that.

i think the the pilots used to flip the spit over so gravity was in effect and that made it for a more safer ditch........

I'm not sure on it's plausibility, but either way, I enjoyed it, and that was an unexpected twist! and that's a very risky manuever to do that.. I would've thought you'd have died for doing that alone, especially if fuel or ammunition got caught in the fire when it hits. And from looks, I do believe it's an FW 109 (E? or maybe not even at all) or a BF109, either way. I think the spitfire's wrong though, looks like an Mk5 whereas If I'm right, the RAF only had Mk1a / Mk2 at the Battle of Britain, and even then, I don't know if this story was based on something true.. but the ending makes it sound like it was loosely based with the facts.

Re: "The German"
it wasn't necessarily during the battle of Britain, the bombing went on for a long time after that and yeah that wing exploding is a bit thin as well, no fuel in there just air, the fuel tank sat just in front of the pilot on a spit (hence the high rate of burn casualties)
the fuel tank on a 109 sat behind the pilot so there was nothing in most of the wing on them either.

Ah, well there goes my theory of fuel exploding, but surely some ammunition must've been in there with the guns being wing mounted? either way, strange, I'd expect the wing to rip off but I wouldn't of expected flames as such really.

Re: "The German"
Its a messerschmidt BF 109 d, if im not mistaken, no exterial bulbs on the engine block, no outside or underwing cannons, no axis canon, just 2 nose MGs and 2 wing MGs.
and spitfire is defo right, u see the significant heat exchanger under the right wing offside the body.
True on the exploding fact, the fuel tanks were not part of the wings and the 7.62 ammo is hard to ignite on side impact.
but i doubt as well they could chrashland safely with just 2/3 of their wings. to keep the planes even straight, they would max out their flaps, no chace of stoping the spin whenever it starts.
so this is it for the facts... the story itself: awsome.
get 2 soldiers of 2 nations hostile to each other, take their guns away and tell them they're off duty during the rest of the war... they might become friends.
thx for sharing voo

Re: "The German"
No problem chris, thanks for confirming a few details there
I know, very true what you say, I thought the bit with the cigarettes just shows the shift in power from one minute having a gun at his head to the next being equal, yet the german still shows compassion for their situation.
10/10 for this brilliant film
