3DS max
Hey there,
I was wondering if some people here have some experience with creating models. I recently started out, and I could use some help with some things. (I'm using 3ds max 2012)
Here are some of my models.
I didnt finish this because it was sooo bugged.
This is my current "project". Its the ANPRC 148.
I'm having trouble adding the buttons in the top part. I can't seem to get it done, or else its just lines everywhere.
Some pointers would be great

I have it a as a student licence. I've had about 1 hour intro and almost made the front of a plane but then time was up. I really need to get into ittoo because I need it for my games but I never take the time to do them.

Lol, that sentence almost looks like an internet scam

Looks really interesting and I would love to create something for you guys. I am still a bit of a beginner I'm afraid. If you want I'll try and make some stuff for you guys, but I have no clue on how to get the best "performance" and stuff like that from an object. I also have pretty much no idea about those UV textures someone was talking about.

Never used 3dsMax. I mode those bits in Pro/DESKTOP a few years ago, so I don't really feel I can "model".

Re: 3DS max
Basically what I do is I create a 'plane' which I then paste a reference photo to. Then I create a second plane and I draw over the reference photo.
Which basically makes it look from this:
To this:
And then in the mean time I also add depth etc.

yeah come on guys, wouldn't you want to say in game every time some picked up your model "I did that, oh i have told you that before lol"
i can make models, only from a different generation, scratch built scale models for railway stuff etc you guys that have the ability to do this stuff are very lucky (remember i didn't even have comps at school in my day hehe)
you should all make use of it and like Sta says PR is screaming out for this kinda thing, get busy people !!

It's basically a cylinder , you create a cylinder first then start shaping it up depending on the actual model itself , same thing goes with barrel as well .

How do you attach it to the rest of the gun then? :/

Re: 3DS max
Edit : misundrestood the question
It's easy really , you first model the thing you want to with whatever the geometrical shape then click the actual model itself , find attach which is in the modify panel , click and then click on the shape which you created just before . That's all . There is also a way where you can group 'em , that doesn't combine them compeletely but group them to do that , you select both of the models click on the group popdown menu and click group , that groups them , you can break it up later if you want to .
Well speed , to be honest i don't find myself as a senior modeller as of yet , at least not at a level where i can model for games . Game modelling requires a lot of time and skill , which i lack em both . Need to improve my skills to be able to step into that world .

Re: 3DS max
yes absolutely Sta, think, the next time your on a PR map how many vBf2 stuff is still actually there, if you start with some thing as simple as a bin or a gate or door it would all add to the ever increasing uniqueness and win of PR.
BX you cant get expert at anything without going through the beginner, getting there and competent stages, that goes for every single walk of life, show willing and you'll be surprised how many people will help.
there is a great thread on PR forums about someone creating a garage, read that thread and look at how many people are willing to help, you wont be alone for long as long as you're prepared to show willing.
same goes for the rest of the posters here, Deadly i could make that flange in real life, it would take a lathe, a jig borer and then the perimeter holes would need to be indexed either on a mill or back in the lathe, yes a black art to most if you will, which is how this stuff here makes me feel !! would love to be creative digitally but i really think i missed the boat so all the best to those that can.

Re: 3DS max
Wahay, since school is getting less stressy I decided to go and pick up modeling again. Been following the Beretta 9000 tutorial and it's turning out pretty good, I've got the main stuff finished, now I just need to touch up all the little details
Here's what I've got so far:
I feel a bit bad about the barrel, it's really too small, maybe I'll go and edit that a bit.
Let me know what you think!
-edit
Here's a more "animated" screenshot.

Re: 3DS max
Haha, yes I would! You were allready talking about it earlier in this thread and I even visited the norwegian statics thread on the PR forums before. I won't be able to start anything to fast now though(I've still got a couple of school projects going at the moment, but after that I'm free to do some stuff).
I'll have to install 3ds max9 though, that's the one that works best with BF2 right?

Haha, I'll make anything really! Just be "aware" that I'm really new to this, in addition that it'll probaply take some time for me to make it, I could use some tips on optimization and such. But I guess I'll be able to figure that out on the PR forums. (btw. kit geometris is like texturing and stuff right? Just wanna say that I really don't have any experience at all at doing that.. Do want to learn how to texture though )

Little update
Not sure how to render correctly yet, this is just a screenshot..
Anyhoo, I'm pretty much done now, only need to "optimize" it and apply smooth groups

Yay, finnaly finished it! Now complete with smooth groups (there are some smoothing errors, but you can't really see them here ) I believe tri-count is around 2250.
I'm very pleased with the end result because I think it really looks good Next step would be to texture it.

Re: 3DS max
you have to work around areas within red square...that extruded portion under the barrel doesnt look so good...also the barrel needs to be a bit longer, hollowed and perhaps beveled(or, of course you can make the muzzle round, but it will cost you some poly's and tri-count) to give it that natural look

Re: 3DS max
Thanks for the tips, I'll try and work on that, but I don't see what's bad about the "extruded" portion onder the barrel (it's really there and it's another "barrel" or something like that)
Didnt even think about hollowing the barrel so I'll definitly do that And maybe I'll make it a bit more "high poly" up there, basically it was meant to be in a game so that's why those points arent really that detailed. (not that im planning to put it in a game)

Some pointers would be great
there are 2 ways for buttons:
1. you have a poly for every button and you extrude them a little
2. create the buttons separately and you weld them to the surface
Theere are 2 ways to have depth: one is by texturing, other is by model: texturing will cost you time, model will cost you tri-count and time. Depends what you need that model for: if bf2/arma 2, ill go for texturing, if its for show off, well, model will always be the good looking way.
wait a minute, are u talking about the knobs on the top? just create 2 cylinders with no segment height between top and bottom and weld them to top model.
PS. Are your laptop batteries dead??

Hey thanks for the link Sta! But I allready used Z-Trooper his rendering method (in the beretta 9000 one at least ), which I think looks great. But I'll remember that if I'd ever want to make a clay render, because it does look a bit different (and a different kind of nice )
