Ok, time to get yer XP hats on guys.
Is there any setting in XP that might cut an internet connection, if a machine is left to idle?

my desktop (Windows XP) doesn't drop unless the router does. Though if your talking wifi Windows XP handles it quite badly and only reconnects sometimes if it drops the wifi connection.

Ok, I've thrown everything I know at this (yeah yeah I know, about the size of a postage stamp) but it's still dropping connection.
Anyone know the cheapest place to get an OEM copy of Vista. Dirt Cheap would be good!

Look at the wirless card drivers there may be a power save option in the device manager to turn/sleep the device to save power.
Or if its a laptop set the power usage on mains/batterie to max this should stop any devices from sleeping when idle. but make sure your running on mains and step it back down when your mobile or your battire wont last 5 mins.
