Tribes Ascend, free FPS multiplayer-only game.

Based on the Unreal engine, i'm hoping this can fulfill my need for a casual shooter, to be a counterpoint to the (slow paced) PR.

It's apparently free to play, i'm downloading the Beta at the mo so i'll give a short review.

Had a go through it, and...mother of god.

Let me lay it out, in Tribes 1 AND 2 we simply would choose a level of armour (Light/Medium/Heavy), and then customise stuff around that armour selection...For T:A they have decided to go for a class outfit system with relatively specialised unlocks in each class.

Am I angry about the removal of customisation? Yes...
Do I mind now that I've looked? not really!

The stuff they have added in to fill the void and bring tribes to the new dimension of games is so worth it, they have re-imagined the game and not been restrained by past schemes, and I think it could work nicely.
One example is, back in the day...we had the "Chaingun"...a somewhat innaccurate spray and pray thing, now they have mixed it out with an Assault rifle and a Shotgun, both of which are so much better in their own rights than the weapon they replaced.

The Credits OR gold scheme is nice too.

This is taking some time to get my head around, and I have to go to work now, but I have been having some fun!

I took the flag on the last game and scooted around the map with it. I *think* that's the point as I got some bronze award do-whatsit.

Anyway I got a knife kill to, so my primary aim has been accomplished!

Very unintuitive at first but starting to be a lot of fun.

Yeah, this version of "Team Deathmatch" is what was once known as "team rabbit", there is no capture point, the enemy just bleeds lives as your team "rabbit" holds the flag, everyone can see the flag/rabbit, just make sure the rabbit is on your team.

Installing when I get home, how long will it take? Might be on for a game tonight if it's fairly quick liiiiiikkkkeee

Had a quick blast tonight.. Addictive to say the least! Good game, but it's really easy for me as a soldier.. within 3 games, had a 3.0000 K/D, just so easy to mow them down with an Assault Rifle, and I didn't even buy any upgrades, even easier now I have more health and more ammo :/
