This one is quite old, I remember seeing in the first year comp sci labs 2 years ago. Yeah the barrel roll one has been all over the internet in the last few days, it is pretty awesome.

its how they tested the new search mechanics. Google will now sort by relivance cross reff'ng date/time, topic age of web page and a few others.
for example if you search royal wedding Google will assume you mean the one from this year and not bring up result of henry the 8th. It takes into account of what sites get clicked on how long you stayed on the site and wether you clicked back as it wasn't a relavant page. The More people search for an event new, place etc the better and more accurate the results will be due to the number of same type searches before yours.
that's why I don't use tool bars or google+ nosey fukers.
